How Panama is organised
Panama is divided into ten provinces plus several indigenous comarcas with special autonomy. Each has its own landscape, economy and character.
The provinces
- Panamá & Panamá Oeste — the capital region and the Pacific beach corridor.
- Colón — Caribbean port, the free zone and canal infrastructure.
- Coclé — beaches, El Valle and ranching.
- Chiriquí — highlands, coffee and David, the western hub.
- Veraguas — the only province touching both oceans.
- Herrera & Los Santos — the folkloric Azuero Peninsula.
- Bocas del Toro — Caribbean islands and banana country.
- Darién — vast, wild rainforest.
The comarcas
Guna Yala, Emberá-Wounaan and Ngäbe-Buglé are self-governing indigenous territories that preserve distinct languages and traditions.
