When Panama launched its new country brand in August 2026, the name raised a fair question: why is Panama the host of the world, and not just another tropical destination with a confident slogan? The answer is that few countries can make the claim this literally. “Panamá, Anfitrión del Mundo” (“Panama, Host of the World”) — presented by PROMTUR Panamá and the Panama Tourism Authority (ATP), and backed by President Mulino — is less an aspiration than a description of what the isthmus already does every day.
Why is Panama the host of the world? Five hard reasons
1. The Canal: hosting global trade for over a century
The Panama Canal is the most concrete hosting operation on Earth: ships from every trading nation cross the isthmus between the Pacific and the Atlantic, every day, year after year. No metaphor required — the world literally passes through Panama. The new brand’s logo even encodes it: the curves of the two letter “A”s represent the two oceans, with Panama in the center connecting them.
2. The hub of the Americas
Tocumen International Airport, with Copa Airlines at its core, is the connecting point of the hemisphere — the airport through which the Americas change planes. Copa’s stopover program turns that traffic into tourism, inviting connecting passengers to spend days in Panama at no extra airfare. A country whose airport exists to receive the continent has a strong claim on the word “host.”
3. Two oceans, one small country
Panama is one of the only places where a visitor can swim in the Pacific and the Caribbean in the same day. Add rainforest minutes from the capital, cool highlands around Boquete, and hundreds of islands from Bocas del Toro to Guna Yala, and the hosting offer is genuinely continental in miniature. Our Discover Panama guides map it region by region.
4. A melting pot that already hosted the world once
Panama’s population is the living record of everyone who ever crossed it: Indigenous nations, Afro-Caribbean communities, and families from every continent who arrived with the railroad, the Canal and the trade that followed. Diversity is one of the brand’s four attributes (with generosity, connection and trust) because it is demographic fact, not positioning.
5. Frictionless arrival: dollars, connectivity, services
The economy runs on the US dollar, removing exchange hassle for the largest visitor markets. International banking, healthcare and services infrastructure are unusually deep for a country this size. And Panama is one of the few carbon-negative countries in the world — the forests absorb more carbon than the nation emits — which makes it an easy conscience choice too.
The brand just names what was already true
The purpose of the new brand — to host with generosity and promote prosperity — spans five pillars: tourism, investment, exports, logistics and sustainability. President Mulino has announced the strategy will go to the National Assembly to become law, so the claim is intended to outlast governments. And with “La Marea Roja” heading to the 2026 World Cup, the host is arriving on the global stage with its flag already waving.
