Every October 21, tens of thousands of pilgrims converge on the small Caribbean town of Portobelo to venerate the Cristo Negro, the Black Christ, one of the most revered religious images in Panama and the wider region. Housed in the Church of San Felipe, the life-sized dark wooden statue of the Nazarene is the object of extraordinary devotion, and its feast day is among the most important religious pilgrimages in the country.

Devotees travel from across Panama and neighboring nations, many walking dozens of kilometers along the highway from Colon, some crawling the final stretch on their knees or dressed in purple robes as an act of penance and gratitude for miracles received. In the evening the statue is carried through the streets on a flower-laden platform in a slow, swaying procession accompanied by prayers, incense and emotional crowds well into the night.

The Festival del Cristo Negro is a profound expression of Panamanian faith and popular religiosity, blending Catholic devotion with the cultural traditions of the Caribbean coast. Witnessing it offers a moving and unforgettable insight into the spiritual life of the nation.
