Autonomous indigenous territories
Beyond its provinces, Panama recognises several comarcas — semi-autonomous territories governed by indigenous peoples who preserve their own languages, customs and leadership.
The main comarcas

- Ngäbe-Buglé — Panama’s largest indigenous group, in the western highlands.
Culture and autonomy
The comarcas manage their own internal affairs and land, a model that has helped preserve indigenous identity. Visitors are welcome in many areas but should travel respectfully and with local guidance.
